The Kiwanis Club of New Castle-Henry County recently held a “cereal drive” to benefit Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis. The local Kiwanians collected 33 boxes of cereal for Riley Hospital’s food pantry.

The families of many of the children treated at Riley deal with food insecurity.

In addition to the cereal, items for the Kiwanis Club Komfort Kart were donated. Kiwanians volunteer at Riley Children’s Hospital to take the Komfort Kart around the hospital, distributing free personal care items to parents, many of whom came to the hospital with their children in emergency situations.

The cereal and the Komfort Kart items will be delivered Sunday, Sept. 18, as Kiwanians from around the state of Indiana gather for a service project day at Riley Children’s Hospital.

The Indiana District of Kiwanis’ relationship with Riley Children’s Hospital began in 1919 as they helped with fundraising for the hospital’s construction. In 1926 the Indiana District raised $200,000 for the building of the Kiwanis K-Wing of the hospital.

Currently, Indiana Kiwanians are raising $1 million for the “Delivering Hope and Health” campaign to assist Riley’s efforts in addressing the state’s infant mortality rate.

Local Kiwanians welcome all individuals and businesses interested in helping in these efforts with Riley Hospital as well as the club’s local projects such as the “Shoes for Kids” program.

The Kiwanis Club of New Castle-Henry County meets noon Thursdays at Mancino’s in New Castle.
